As you would agree, leaders must focus on their goals and coach their employees to do the same. Here are some tips on how to coach employees to help you help them persevere in the attainment of their goals:
Build rapport with your employees, so that you have a good relationship from the start. This sounds simple but are you doing it? And if you think you are doing it, lets put it to the test: Do your employees invite you to join them for lunch and or to personal outside-of-work events? A real friend does. If this is not happening, it seems like something is missing in the rapport building process.
Begin with praise and honest appreciation. Are you a “mistake†finder or a “good†finder? What you search for matters ever so importantly. Consider the times when you have been praised for completing something well. From that moment, if you are like most people, you have a warm feeling about doing it again, and you strive to meet to exceed the standard of which you complete it last time. Employees are the same.
Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly. This takes the unnecessary confrontation out of correction, will prevent damage to the relationship from occurring, and they will appreciate your consideration for them. Remember the sage advice.
- Reassure employees and give the other person a fine reputation to live up to. Many people already know the story behind Oprah Winfrey’s success, but for those of you who don’t, in simplest terms it was the principle of having someone she respected expect a lot of her, causing her to expect more from herself, leading to the growth and success she has achieved to date.
